Tabacalera Palma

Factory History
Tabacalera Palma is one of the oldest continuously operating, family-owned tobacco and cigar manufacturers in the Dominican Republic. The company’s origins trace back to the Blanco family’s 19th-century agricultural roots, established by José Manuel Blanco Lozada and advanced by José Arnaldo Blanco I. Formally established as a cigar manufacturer in 1925 and registered in 1936 by José Arnaldo Blanco II, the operation initially focused on supplying the domestic market, growing to employ around 200 full-time rollers by 1960.
Under the leadership of the fourth generation, José Arnaldo “Jochy” Blanco, the company transformed into a major export-oriented operation and tobacco producer. In 1995, Jochy Blanco founded the La Palma industrial zone in Tamboril, moving operations to a dedicated facility on the outskirts of Santiago. Recently, the company transitioned into a newer facility adjacent to its historical site while maintaining its core manufacturing footprint in Tamboril.
A foundational element of Tabacalera Palma’s identity is its commitment to full vertical integration. The company manages over 500 acres across four farms in the Cibao Valley (Flor de Palma, El Potrero, Los Cocos, and Gurabo), cultivating varieties such as Piloto Cubano, Corojo, Criollo 98, Olor, and Broadleaf. This direct oversight spans seed development, soil preparation, harvesting, curing, processing, aging, rolling, and final packaging.
Beyond its own house brands—most notably La Galera, which pays homage to the rolling room and the company’s 1936 registration—Tabacalera Palma earned widespread international renown as a premier private-label manufacturer. The factory has produced blends for prominent global brands such as Aging Room (collaborating closely with Rafael Nodal), Matilde, Kristoff, and Villiger.
Employing approximately 450 workers—predominantly women—the company maintains rigorous quality control, extensive aging reserves, and distinct divisions for both handmade artisan cigars and machine-made products. The legacy continues with the involvement of the fifth generation, including Jochy’s son José Manuel Blanco. As an active founding member of ProCigar, Tabacalera Palma stands as an enduring pillar of Dominican premium cigar manufacturing, uniting over a century of family agricultural heritage with modern global production.
