Tabacalera de García is one of the world’s largest and most significant industrial-scale premium cigar manufacturing operations. Located in La Romana on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast, the factory dates its official establishment to 1969 and has been a founding ProCigar member since 1992.

The facility’s roots trace back to the influx of Cuban cigar expertise following the Cuban Revolution, when members of the Menéndez García family and other industry veterans brought traditional blending, rolling, and manufacturing knowledge to the region. Unlike the volcanic soils of Santiago and the Cibao Valley, La Romana provided an ideal strategic and logistical environment within the Zona Franca Industrial I, evolving into a powerhouse for international brands such as Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann, and VegaFina.

To manage high-volume production without sacrificing consistency, the factory pioneered sophisticated structural systems, most notably formalizing the Grupo de Maestros in the early 1990s under legendary leader José Seijas. This collective of master blenders—including prominent figures like Pedro Ventura—ensures strict quality control, rigorous leaf classification, and long-term tobacco aging.

Following corporate transitions through SEITA, Altadis, and Imperial Brands, a pivotal structural shift occurred after Imperial divested its premium cigar business in 2020. This prompted a €15 million investment to construct a brand-new, purpose-built facility for premium handmade cigars, which was completed in 2022.

Today, the sprawling complex spans over 300,000 square feet, supporting more than 2,000 employees and four massive manufacturing galeras capable of producing over 40 million handmade cigars annually. Uniquely integrated, the operation encompasses everything from raw tobacco processing (handling roughly 1,000 tons of leaf) and extensive aging rooms to an on-site box-manufacturing plant. Operating today under the Tabacalera group, Tabacalera de García seamlessly bridges massive industrial scale with artisanal craftsmanship.
