Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia. is the Dominican manufacturing heart of the Fuente family, whose cigar roots trace back to 1912 in West Tampa, Florida. Following devastating losses in Nicaragua and Honduras, Carlos Fuente Sr. and Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr. relocated operations to Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, establishing the company on September 4, 1980, with just seven employees in Zona Franca No. 1.

The early years focused on rebuilding tobacco inventories, prioritizing long-term leaf aging, and reinvesting profits. In 1983, the company launched the Arturo Fuente Hemingway line, successfully reviving complex Perfecto shapes and establishing a demand for specialized manual rolling skills.

During the late 1980s, Fuente expanded into agricultural infrastructure, culminating in a historic breakthrough in 1992: the successful cultivation of Dominican wrapper tobacco (“Project X from Planet 9”). This paved the way for the Fuente Fuente OpusX, proving that the Dominican Republic could produce premium wrappers capable of competing globally and reshaping the country’s reputation in the handmade cigar industry.

The 1990s brought significant growth, expanding beyond proprietary brands to include contract and collaborative production for names like Ashton and Diamond Crown. The company weathered major challenges, including a devastating 2011 fire in Villa González that destroyed substantial aged tobacco inventories. Despite setbacks, the company continued expanding its agricultural and manufacturing infrastructure.

Beginning around 2015, Carlos Fuente Jr. redeveloped the Santiago complex into a multi-facility operation incorporating dedicated thematic rolling rooms, aging areas, and a 69,000-square-foot box-manufacturing plant opened in 2018. Today, the family-owned enterprise has grown from its modest origins into a massive, multi-stage production complex spanning tobacco preparation, bunching, rolling, quality control, aging, and packaging.

As a founding member of ProCigar, Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia. stands as a testament to four generations of industry heritage, agricultural innovation, and resilient adaptation over more than four decades in the Dominican Republic.
